Ingo Schaefer is a photographer and author based in Germany. He studied music and American studies in Duisburg, where he focused particularly on the work of Walker Evans, Robert Flaherty, and American documentary film. His photographic work centers on portrait, landscape, and dance photography – with a particular emphasis on analogue black-and-white photography. For many years, he has worked with camera systems ranging from 35mm to medium and large format. Influenced by numerous photographic journeys to different countries, he developed a personal approach to visual storytelling. His first book, Dancers – Choreographers in Dialogue, explores the creative exchange between dancers and choreographers. In Back to Film in Vietnam, he shares his experiences with analogue camera equipment while traveling. The book is aimed at photographers who wish to engage deeply with analogue black-and-white photography – from choosing the right equipment and planning a photo trip to developing film.
